Lent

Ash Wednesday begins the Season of Lent, which is the 40-day period not counting Sundays before Good Friday. Lent commemorates the time Jesus spent in the wilderness at the beginning of his ministry, struggling with demons and deciding who he was to be and what he was to do. The season of Lent reenacts this time of searching and it also looks forward to the passion of the Crucifixion and the celebration of the Resurrection. It is, then, a time of preparation, of solemn soul searching, of decision, and commitment to action.

Ash Wednesday

On Ash Wednesday we utalize ashes to remind us of our mortality and of our reliance on God. The ashes come from burning the Palm branches from the previous Holy Week. Ashes are marked on the forehead---either in the shape of a cross or an X--the Greek letter Chi, standing for Christ--as a sign that we belong to Christ---and to each other as we share in this community.

Tenebrae

Tenebrae is Latin for shadows or darkness. A service of Tenebrae service contains readings from the gospels which describe the time between the Last Supper and the Passion of Christ, including the last words of Jesus. On Thursday, April 1 at 7:00 pm, we will have a service of Tenebrae.

Easter Sunday

Bethel will have Easter Service on April 4, at 10:00 am, childcare and an Easter Egg Hunt are also on tap.
